Issei: The First Generation exploes the struggles of Japanese immigrants in rural California during the first half of the 20th Century. The 1984 documentary (produced and directed by poet and filmmaker Toshi Washizu) was thought to have been lost, but was rediscovered and restored with the assistance of Professor and Aratani Endowed Chair Lane Hirabayashi of UCLA's Department of Asian American Studies.
